We recently received a special request from Craviotto artist-endorsee, Tom Meadows (DUFFY). Tom asked "can you produce a white-wash finish on a 4x13 snare drum?" Johnny said he'd be happy to create the finish, and now you have a chance to see the finished product!

Johnny C. has mentioned the possibility of creating an entire kit in this finish... very classy!

Craviotto Artist Matt Wilson Featured on Covers of Both Downbeat and JazzTimes Magazines!

New York based drummer and bandleader Matt Wilson is the cover story subject of the two leading U.S. jazz magazines for the month of November. The Downbeat article is an interview with fellow drummers and bandleaders Lewis Nash and Jeff "Tain" Watts conducted by Ken Micallef. The JazzTimes piece is an depth look at the world of Matt Wilson written by noted jazz writer Nate Chinen.

Wilson had an extremely busy summer and fall touring with his quartet in support of their 2009 release "That's Gonna Leave a Mark" his eighth album as a leader for Palmetto records. The album features the sonic beauty of his Craviotto kit which features a 14x18 bass drum, 8x12 mounted tom, 14x14 floor tom, 5x10 side snare (mounted to the right of the 8x12) and the "piece de resistance", the 6.5 x 14, 8 lug, thirty degree bearing edge snare drum.

"On this recording you not only HEAR the spectrum of the sound of these masterpiece Craviotto drums you FEEL the sound baby!", exclaims Matt.

"The depth of the Craviotto sound opens up all of the senses. You can see and smell the drum sound. As a matter of fact, you can TASTE the snare drum sound. It was as if Johnny was simmering up a pot of marinara sauce when he made this drum. BON APPETIT CATS!"

In addition, Matt toured with Trio M throughout Canada and Europe and also performed with the John Scofield/Joe Lovano Quartet, Elvis Costello, Joe Lovano and Us Five, Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, Bobby Hutcherson, Cedar Walton, John Medeski, Greg Osby, Ted Nash, Joey DeFrancesco, Ray Anderson-Marty Ehrlich Quartet, Dena DeRose, Myra Melford, Benny Green, Dave Liebman and many others.

Matt was also artist-in-residence at the Cornish School of the Arts as part of the Earshot Jazz Festival in Seattle and conducted workshops at the University of Washington, University of Colorado, University of Central Washington, Towson State University, Metro State University, Vancouver Jazz Festival, Edmonton Jazz Festival and the Osnabruck Conservatory in Germany. He was also on the faculty of the Stanford Jazz Workshop and continues teaching at Sarah Lawrence College. He is currently writing a book which will explore improvising and creativity for the drumset.

Jeremy began playing with Our Lady Peace in 1993, when he was only 17 years old. After 5 million albums sold and countless tours throughout North America and Europe, OLP has allowed Jeremy to create a body of work that continues to grow and expand. OLP released there 7th studio album entitled Burn Burn on July 21st, 2009.

Jeremy is active in teaching drums and public speaking, his radio show "Taggarts Take" is available on ITunes podcasts and Canada's #1 modern rock station, The Edge 102, in Toronto.

I caught up with Tom on a well deserved but rarely possible break from touring as he reflected on the last 18 months, the future ahead and his past successes and influences..."

"In a way it's about getting the right things around you in order that you're still you, but blending in to the sounds around you. The gear you're playing on dictates the way a player plays because of what you hear when you hit them. That's a massively important part of choosing your tools because when you hit that first tom, it needs to sound like it's placed authentically in the track. Using the right drums will immediately get you into a certain mindset, and I know that as pretentious as it may sound, it's like method drumming; half the job is done for you by having the right sound. That's a large part of why I'm playing Craviotto drums now because they're just beautifully crafted instruments, that mould themselves to what you need, tuning is easy and there's a breadth of pitch and tone I don't get anywhere else".

Craviotto Drum Company today announced the addition of one of Nashville's best, Chris McHugh, to their family of Artist-Endorsees. Not only can Chris be seen touring with Keith Urban on his 2009 "Escape Together World Tour," but his work can be heard on numerous platinum and Grammy Award winning recordings from a virtual who's who in the music industry. It is estimated that his involvement in the making of nearly 50 albums has played a role in the sale of upwards of 100 million CDs worldwide.

A New Jersey native, Chris moved to Nashville in 1985 to start his professional music career. He has since recorded, produced and audio engineered for the likes of Faith Hill, Brooks & Dunn, Rascal Flatts, LeAnn Rimes, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Garth Brooks, Jewel, etc. He has also served as Keith Urban's musical director for the past two years.

On January 19th 2009, Mr. Jimmy Kimmel took delivery of his new Craviotto Custom Shop Series Drum Set. Showcased at Namm 2009, this "1 of 1" kit is a "Hybrid" of Walnut/Curly Maple/Walnut, and has matching curly maple reinforcing rings, as well as matching curly maple vintage-style wood hoops and clips.

Mr. Kimmel contacted Craviotto Drum Company after Ronnie Vannucci & The Killers played on his show, just before Thanksgiving 2008. He mentioned that he thought Ronnie's solid walnut kit, was one of the most beautiful drum sets he'd ever seen. Johnny Craviotto showed him what we were "working on" for Namm 2009, and he loved the kit!

Mr. Kimmel and his son both play drums, and now own one of the most incredible and unique kits Craviotto Drum Company has ever produced. This kit, #100 for the company, marks Craviotto's 5th anniversary since their 2004 Namm debut.

Craviotto is honored to have Mr. Kimmel playing Craviotto drums.

The best jazz of 2008...

MVP: Scott Amendola. This workhorse drummer has reversed the usual pattern that says local talents have to flee to New York to find themselves. Born in New Jersey, he moved to the Bay Area in the '90s after attending Boston's Berklee College of Music and has stayed here ever since. Now his buoyant style - always with funk in mind - has made him the most in-demand local drummer. His bands include Plays Monk, the Nels Cline Singers and the Scott Amendola Band, and he's played on dozens of CDs, including those of Bill Frisell, John Zorn, Jim Campilongo, Joel Harrison and Charlie Hunter.

Charli Persip joins Craviotto Drum Company

Craviotto Drum Company is proud to announce the addition of legendary jazz drummer, Charli Persip to its family of Artist-Endorsees.

After playing with Tadd Dameron in 1953, drummer Charli Persip toured and recorded with Dizzy Gillespie's big and small bands between 1953-1958. Charli then joined Harry Edison's quintet and later the Harry James Orchestra before forming his own group, the Jazz Statesmen with Roland Alexander, Freddie Hubbard, and Ron Carter in 1960. Around this time, Charli Persip also recorded with several formidable jazz musicians including Lee Morgan, Dinah Washington, Kenny Dorham, Zoot Sims, Red Garland, Gil Evans, Don Ellis, Eric Dolphy, Roland Kirk, and Gene Ammons. Persip was also the drummer on the legendary "Eternal Triangle" recording, featuring Sonny Rollins and Sonny Stitt. Charli Persip also toured for several years as a drummer and conductor with Billy Eckstine (1960-1973).

Along with his performing activities, Charli has earned a reputation as a superb educator. Since 1974, Charli Persip has been instructor of drums and music, for Jazzmobile Inc. - New York. He is currently Associate Professor at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in Manhattan, and has had a highly successful private practice for over fifteen years. As a teacher, Charli ranks among the best. Charli Persip is also a popular attraction at drum clinics, and gives lecture-demonstrations at the nations most prestigious schools: Howard University, University of Massachusetts, Ohio State University, and North Texas State University.

Charli currently leads Supersound, his jazz big band that was started in the mid-80's. The emergence of Supersound (formally known as Superband) as a major musical experience, is underscored by its latest self-produced recording, Intrinsic Evolution. Charli Persip and Supersound's release of Intrinsic Evolution is the fourth album recorded by this suburb band, and showcases 25 years of big band leadership.

Supersound's first album was recorded on the Stash label, and was titled Charli Persip and Superband. The group's second album Superband 11, and third album No Dummies Allowed, was recorded on the Soul Note label. Tracks from these recordings are played on jazz stations throughout the world, especially in the greater New York area, which is also home-base for Charli and his band. The musical direction of Supersound, presents the total spectrum of Jazz. From the Be-bop era to the present, fans of all ages have thoroughly enjoyed listening and dancing to the music of Supersound.

Supersound's library of tunes consists of unique arrangements on both standards and original compositions. The individual sound of the band stems from its tri-concept: First, an excellent rhythm section with a small band feeling. Second, all the horns know the melody and harmonic structure of each tune, as well as their written parts. Thirdly, the band portrays the true drama in the music, while maintaining the basic jazz big band traditions. Supersound’s concept crosses the threshold of musical transformation, with Charli Persips drumming - unique in itself. Supersound is truly a unique jazz orchestra.

Chad Cromwell joins Craviotto Drum Company

NOW ON TOUR WITH NEIL YOUNG

Craviotto Drum Company is proud to announce the addition of Chad Cromwell to its family of artist-endorsees. Chad Cromwell's career began to blossom in Memphis, Tennessee during the early 1980's. In 1986, Chad moved out west to join Joe Walsh for a collaboration which produced Got Any Gum? and Ordinary Average Guy, which resulted in multiple US and worldwide tours. The following year, 1987, Chad got the call to record with one of the world's most prolific songwriters, Neil Young. These sessions became Neil Young & The Bluenotes. After touring to promote this record, and producing MTV's 'Video of the Year', This Note's For You, Neil's interest circled back to 3-piece Rock & Roll which led to the New York and San Francisco recording sessions that ultimately became the album Freedom.

In 1990, Chad moved to Nashville, Tennessee. Richard Bennett and Tony Brown were among the first producers in Nashville to request Chad for session work. These two producers would prove extremely helpful in creating a successful recording career for Chad, in Nashville. In 1996, Chad’s artistry behind the drums was formally recognized by his peers, when Chad was nominated for the Nashville Music Awards as "Drummer/Percussionist of the Year". That same year, Chad could be heard on Leann Rimes breakthrough album, "Blue".

During the mid-90's, Mark Knopfler recruited Chad for the recording of Golden Heart, Mark Knopfler’s first solo album. Chad soon went on tour with Mark in 1996, to promote the album. Mark Knopfler and Chad Cromwell would go on to work together quite a bit; including the soundtracks to the films Metroland and the US blockbuster Wag The Dog. Knopfler would team up with Cromwell again in 2001 for his album Sailing To Philadelphia, 2003's album The Ragpicker's Dream, & 2004's album Shangri-La.

Chad's studio work would continue throughout 2004 and 2005, working with artists such as Sugarland, Gretchen Wilson, Trisha Yearwood, Marty Stewart, and Miranda Lambert.

Chad Cromwell's career has seen him in the studio and on stage/TV/touring with an impressive list of major recording artists. In addition to those already mentioned, Chad's versatility behind the drums has been showcased with multiple country and pop artists throughout the years. Chad Cromwell has executed a solid-feel behind many of today's hit-making artists, including: Blake Shelton, John Michael Montgomery, Willie Nelson, Jackson Browne, Jessica Simpson, Boz Scaggs, Wynonna, Bonnie Raitt, Peter Frampton, Donnie Osmond, Gary Allen, Radney Foster, Comedians Jeff Foxworthy & Bill Engvall, Kenny Chesney, Lee Ann Womack, Amy Grant, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Brooks & Dunn, and Keb' Mo'.

The spring of 2005 brought a new project with Neil Young, called "Prairie Wind". The spring of 2006 brought another recording called "Living with War". Chad performed on Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" Movie, filmed and directed by Johnathan Demme, during the summer of 2005.

During 2006, Chad was hard at work in the studio with artists Livingston Taylor, Toby Keith, as well as recording tracks featured on a new box set release "These Days" by acclaimed country music star Vince Gill. Chad would continue throughout 2006 recording and touring with Neil Young and performing on CSNY's "Freedom of Speech Tour".

Chad Cromwell is currently touring Europe with Neil Young. The tour is expected to run through mid-2009, and US dates will be announced in the coming months.

Matt Wilson - Arts & Crafts... and Craviotto!

Drummer, composer, bandleader and educator Matt Wilson is considered one of the most imaginative and entertaining spirits in jazz today. In the 2007 Downbeat International Critic's Poll, Wilson was voted Rising Star Drummer for the fifth year in a row and his band, Arts and Crafts, was voted Small Group of the Year. The Jazz Journalists Association again recently nominated him as Drummer of the Year, an honor he won in 2003, and he was recognized in the 2007 Modern Drummer Reader's Poll.

Matt's creativity, versatility and sense of humor, along with his infectious positive energy, keeps him in demand. Wilson has appeared on over 170 recordings as a sideman and tours throughout the world. He has performed and or recorded with a wide range of artists including Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, Wynton Marsalis, Lee Konitz, Pat Metheny, Andrew Hill, Bill Frisell, Kenny Barron, Larry Goldings, John Zorn, Ted Nash, Denny Zeitlin, Buster Williams, Bill Mays, Dena Derose, Wycliffe Gordon, Frank Kimbrough, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Ray Anderson, Jane Ira Bloom, Joanne Brackeen, Cecil McBee and many others.

As a leader, Matt has released 7 critically acclaimed recordings on Palmetto Records. His groups, Arts and Crafts, the Matt Wilson Quartet and the Carl Sandburg Project have toured throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia.

Matt Wilson is a popular educator. He has presented his fun-filled and inspirational workshops at schools, festivals and conventions throughout the world. He is a contributor to Modern Drummer magazine and is currently working on a wacky book on improvising for the drum set. He is also on the faculty of the Interplay Jazz Camp, Stanford Jazz Workshop and Sarah Lawrence College.

Matt is elated in becoming a Craviotto artist. "These drums are sonic masterpieces that really sing. They are also mighty pretty on the eyes.
